Lower Cut

Lower Cut

Biography

Lower Cut is a paradox of a phrase with no direct meaning. It derives from the reversal of the boxing term upper cut.

Lower Cut formed in the spring of 2009, when Panos Gounas and Vangelis Stavroulakis decided to kick off a project so they could express their common musical influences. Soon enough Yannis Efthymiou, Alexandros Darmis and Vasilis Mpaldos were added to the group, which took its final form in the autumn of 2011 with the addition of Irene Argyri in the vocals. The band now consists of: Irene Argyri (vocals), Alexandros Darmis (synths, programming), Yannis Efthymiou (bass, programming), Vasilis Mpaldos (drums), Vangelis Stavroulakis (guitars).

From day one they started working on their material, and tried to create their own sound which hovers over the soundscapes of the 90′s British shoegaze scene and the post-punk movement. Lower Cut’s music can be described as a mixture of ethereal vocal lines and synthesizers, alongside loud guitars and rhythm section, combining pop melodies with harsh outbreaks.

They have until now, self-released two EPs, “Lower Cut” (2011), and “3.3” (2012), as long as a full length album, called “Off my Head” (2014), produced by Alex Bolpasis (Artracks Studios), under the label of Puzzlemusik.

Lower Cut’s music is featured in Alexandros Karaiskos’ awarded documentary “Stories from Livadero” (best documentary, International Festival of Peloponnesus 2013).

Lower Cut have played gigs in most live stages in Athens, and have participated in numerous festivals and performances, notably the European Music Day 2013 (Thisseio Square, City Vibes stage), 2festival 2010 (Chania, Crete), Sleep Project (hosted by 6 D.O.G.S. Athens), and various photographic exhibitions of the team “Diaphragm 26”.
